Helice de Sauco is a piece composed in Buenos Aires by Argentine musician Alan Courtis. The main concept behind the composition was to explore the sonic possibilities of the acoustic guitar employing diverse sound processing techniques. Beyond the string's fingerpicking, the piece also includes field recordings and some additional sounds that expands its sonic pallete. Sauco (also called Rayan Elder or Elderberry) is the genus of 5 to 30 different varieties of shrubs and small trees that is distributed in the Andean mountains of South America. This plant has been used as an ingredient in wines, marmalades, drinks, and desserts, but it has also been widely used for its medicinal purposes. The piece was recorded at Yaguareté Studios, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
